Dear Friends,
As you may know, in April 2003, African elephants Peaches, Wankie, and Tatima
were shipped amid controversy from the San Diego Wild Animal Park to the
Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago to make space for new, young elephants who had been
abducted from the wild in Africa. Sadly, both Tatima and Peaches recently died
prematurely, leaving Wankie alone without her only companions of more than 30
years. The Lincoln Park Zoo plans to shuffle Wankie off to more of the same
problems at the Hogle Zoo in a matter of weeks and to eventually bring in more
elephants.
You may also probably know, Hogle Zoo's animal facilities are far from
accomidating for an elephant biologically designed to roam thousands of square
miles in the wild. The Utah Animal Rights Coalition, PETA, IDA and other groups
are working together to convince these zoos to instead send Wankie to a
sanctuary in Tenessee with other elephants and much more space.
PROTEST
When: Wednesday, April 27 at 11:45 AM
Where: Hogle Zoo just North of the parking lot, on the sidewalk
Why: Demand that Wankie be sent to a sanctuary instead of a cement cage!
