SYDNEY (AFP) - Australia's top wool growing association rejected a deal struck between a smaller industry body and animal rights activists which would lift an international boycott on Australian merino wool.
The Australian Wool Growers Association signed a deal with the US-based People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) on Tuesday under which they agreed to phase out the painful practice of mulesing sheep by 2010 and ensure the welfare of live animal exports. ...

* Diet may fight prostate cancer
http://www.sltrib.com/nationworld/ci_2932193
WASHINGTON - Eating better, exercising regularly and cutting stress apparently can slow the progression of early prostate cancer, according to the first study to provide direct evidence that lifestyle changes can fight the common malignancy.
The study of 93 prostate cancer patients found those who adopted a series of lifestyle changes that included a primarily vegan diet, regular moderate exercise and yoga and other relaxation techniques scored better on a standard blood test used to monitor prostate cancer growth a year later. They were also less likely to require additional treatment, and their blood showed signs of being able to inhibit prostate cancer cells. ...
* Free speech over all
http://www.sltrib.com/opinion/ci_2932051
With his ruling in support of the Utah Animal Rights Coalition, U.S. District Court Judge Ted Stewart seems to have joined company with the Main Street Plaza, free-speech-trumps-all-other-rights ilk.
At issue was the coalition's ability to pursue “small, spontaneous demonstrations” (with leaflets and video presentations) on the plaza of Abravanel Hall without first obtaining the county's established 30-day advance protest permit. ...

* Bullfighters gamble with more than cards
http://www.sltrib.com/utah/ci_2939846
LOGAN - There are no safe bets in this poker game - not when a Mexican fighting bull is in the cards.
Just ask Larry Jenkins, who took a huge gamble when he entered the Poker Bullfight at this week's Cache County Fair and Rodeo.
The Preston resident joined two others vying for the $500 prize that would go to the last person seated at the table after rodeo hands released a Mexican fighting bull into the arena. ...
* PETA Rethinks Ads Linking Abuse to Slavery

RICHMOND, Va. - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is reconsidering a campaign linking images of animal abuse with those of slavery after complaints from civil rights groups and others.
The animal rights group's "Animal Liberation" campaign included 12 panels juxtaposing pictures of black people in chains with shackled elephants and other provocative images.
The Norfolk-based group wrapped up the first leg of the tour in Washington on Thursday, visiting 17 cities before deciding to put the tour on hold.
"We're not continuing right now while we evaluate," said Dawn Carr, a PETA spokeswoman. "We're reviewing feedback we've received — most of it overwhelmingly positive and some of it quite negative." ...

###(4) VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES ###
There are many opportunities any given week for volunteers to help with UARC's goals. Here's a few of things we need your help on:
* Gallivan Center Leafletting *
Where: Gallivan Center at 200 S. 50 E., northern entrance
When: 9:00 PM - 10:30 PM on Thursday, 18th and 25th of August
What: Pass out vegan literature
Every Thursday through the month of August we will be leafletting the attendees of the Twilight Concert Series. So far we've passed out over 1,300 brochures and leaflets, and we'd like to keep it up!
* Sugar House Farmers Market *
Where: Sugar House at 2100 S. 1300 E.
When: 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM on Fridays until Sept. 30th
What: Tabling for UARC
Every Friday until Sept. 30th Sugar House will be having a farmers market to promote the local stores and farmers in the area. Raphael of the Free Speech Zone (2144 S. Highland dr. #130) is graciously allowing us to table with him. We are looking for volunteers to help with this.
* Adopt a VSK Stand *
PETA has graciously given UARC thousands of Vegan Starter Kits and stands upon which to put them. We would like to place these stands across the valley and have them frequently refilled. Your responsiblities would include finding a highly trafficed place to put the stand, get permission from the owner of the building to place it, and refill the stand frequently.
To volunteer for any of these things, simply reply to this email.
