* Katrina cats in need of Utah homes
  http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,635159379,00.html
Although the disastrous effects of Hurricane Katrina no longer dominate headlines and the nightly news, some of Katrina's smallest victims still need help.
More than two months after Hurricane Katrina tore through the Gulf Coast, animals continue to be found \u2014 many, remarkably, alive. While skin and bones, thousands of creatures, mostly dogs and cats, have been pulled from under floor-boards, carried off roofs and lifted from the streets. Animal rescue teams continue to search the Gulf Coast, leaving fresh water and dry food behind. ...

* Snake rescuer 'bitten'?
DWR raids W.V. man's home, yet still turns to him for help
  http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,635159881,00.html
A West Valley man who operates a reptile rescue service obtained snakes and a lizard from an undercover informant, then found himself enmeshed in high-powered law enforcement by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources.
Yet even after charges were filed against him, the DWR continues to rely on James Dix's Reptile Rescue Service. It still turns over to him nonprohibited reptiles that need care.
Confusingly, the charges hinge on Dix not having the proper type of permits. Yet different sorts of permits are involved, and at the time of the raid, Dix had a certificate allowing him to handle any type of reptile delivered to him by the DWR for rehabilitation. ...

* Rome law gives pets new rights
  http://www.sltrib.com/nationworld/ci_3197086
ROME - In the greater animal kingdom, the plight of the little goldfish is especially harsh. The tiny creatures are scooped into plastic bags and awarded at carnivals and fairs. They are confined to bowls where they can do nothing but swim around and around. Some (it has been claimed) go blind.
No more. The municipal government of Rome has entered waters where few city halls dare tread. Under a new law, the city's goldfish are entitled to a proper, full-sized aquarium, and they can no longer be given out as contest prizes. ...

  http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,635160058,00.html
SANDY \u2014 A 2,000-pound bull was shot and killed by police Wednesday after it ran loose for nearly 90 minutes near State Street.
The animal got away near 8600 South about 12:20 p.m. when two neighborhood dogs started barking at the bull as it was being loaded into a trailer, Midvale Police Sgt. Steve Shreeve said. ...

* 3 deer poaching convictions overturned
  http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,635160694,00.html
The Utah Court of Appeals overturned three deer poaching convictions this week, ruling the state lacks jurisdiction because they occurred in "Indian Country" and the Ute Tribe \u2014 not the state \u2014 was the victim.
"The state asserts that it was the victim in this case, and because the state is not an Indian, state courts have jurisdiction over the offense," the ruling said. "The state, however, is not the victim." ...
