### RINGLING BROS PROTEST ###

Ringling Bros. Circus will be having performances Wed - Sun this upcoming week. PETA & UARC will be protesting in front of the circus at the North Eastern corner of the Delta Center just about each day of the performance. PETA will also be doing a naked demo on Wednesday. Below is a call to action sent out by PETA:

<<<

PETA, UARC, and local activists are protesting against Ringling Bros. Circus on Wednesday, October 1, at Crossroads Plaza (entrance) 50 S. Main St. in Salt Lake City. The protest starts at noon and should last until 1 p.m. So if you can make it out on your lunch break, we?d love to have you there! As usual, we'll have all the needed materials - so just bring yourself and anyone else that would like to attend.

In case you aren't familiar with this particular demonstration, it is a live re-enactment of a PETA billboard featuring Australian supermodel Imogen Bailey, which you can see here. <http://www.helpthaielephants.com/imogen300.pdf#xml=http://www.petasearch.org/texis/search/pdfhi.txt?query=imogen+&pr=default&prox=page&rorder=500&rprox=500&rdfreq=500&rwfreq=500&rlead=500&sufs=0&order=r&cq=&id=42f2a4ab52>. An activist wearing nothing but shackles and covered in 'scars' and 'bruises,' will be in Salt Lake City to illustrate the suffering of animals in the circus. To learn more about this, click here <http://www.petatv.com/tvpopup/Prefs.asp?video=carson_barnes>. Please cross-post this message and the video clip to others who may be interested this campaign!

And then there's more! Elizabeth will be around to lead a protest on Opening Night (October 28) at 5:30 at the NE corner of the Delta Center (it's the biggest entrance). Eric from UARC will then go on to lead the following protests:

  Wed 9/28 - meet at 5:30 pm
Fri 9/30 - meet at 2:00 pm and at 6:00 pm
Sat. 10/1 - meet at 10:00 am, 2:00 pm, and at 6:00 pm

For more information on this campaign, please visit Circuses.com <http://www.circuses.com/> . If you have questions about this particular demonstration, contact our circus campaigner, Elizabeth, at 757-628-0784.

The circus will be starting 1:30 after the meeting time, making each demo about 1:45 long. Hope to see you there!

### YOUTH ACTIVISM SUMMIT ###

Next weekend the Utah Progressive Network will be co-sponsoring the Youth Activism Summit. Food, music and workshops at the University of Utah Union and OSH buildings, this will be a great opportunity to learn new skills and learn how to communicate your ideas through urban art and traditional media sources.

UARC will be tabling and will be helping to teach a workshop at the event. Exact time and scheduling will follow later this week, but at the moment save the date!

### MIYUN PARK BANQUET ###

As we announced a few weeks ago, UARC will be bringing out Miyun Park, Director of Farm Welfare at the Humane Society of the United States and the former president of Compassion Over Killing. She will be speaking at the University of Utah Officer's Club on Saturday, October 23rd at 6:30 PM.

** New lower price **

We've lowered the price to $10 for a member, $15 for a non-member, and $30 for a membership and a ticket. That's only $15.00 for a membership (normally $25) which gets you discounts to many local businesses. Visit http://www.uarc.com/miyun_park/ to purchase tickets online.

* Battle over sheep heating up
  http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,610152358,00.html
RENO, Nev. (AP) \u2014 Wildlife biologists say they're concerned that contact with domestic sheep could put an endangered population of Sierra bighorn sheep at risk for disease. Sheep ranchers call it a thinly disguised effort to close grazing allotments on federal land.
"They don't care about those bighorn," said Smith Valley sheep rancher Fred Fulstone. "It's a land grab. They're doing it all over the West." ...

* Officer shoots dog while responding to nuisance call
  http://www.sltrib.com/utah/ci_3044911
A Salt Lake City police officer shot and killed a German shepherd on Sunday while responding to a complaint of a barking dog. ...
"We feel horrible when we have to do that. We realized the value of a good animal but also realize how dangerous they can be sometimes"...

Thursday
--------
* Two turtles found alive days after apartment fire
  http://www.sltrib.com/utah/ci_3050919
Everybody feared the two water turtles were dead, killed in a two-alarm fire last week at a Midvale apartment complex. But, on Wednesday, the reptiles were found - alive. Steve Mortensen, the maintenance supervisor for Chelsea Park, 7351 S. Catalpa St. (480 West), went with a helper to the apartment, which was going to be gutted on Thursday, about 5:45 p.m. to make sure it was secure. He shined a flashlight and there the turtles were, in a fish tank against the wall. ...

* Wharton: Some hunters play into the hands of anti-hunter organizations
  http://www.sltrib.com/outdoors/ci_3050515
In a state and nation where hunters are a minority, organizations representing shooting sports often exhibit a near paranoia about "anti-hunting groups."
Read information from the National Rifle Association, Safari Club International or U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance and you would think members of the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals or the Humane Society have so much power that hunting could disappear at any time.
Instead, some hunting practices probably pose a far greater threat to shooting sports, that, when done ethically, are not only legitimate but have helped conserve habitat and species for generations. ...

Friday
------
* Utah animal-care group gets set for Rita
  http://www.sltrib.com/utah/ci_3054646
A team from Kanab-based Best Friends Animal Society was in Houston on Thursday, assessing the needs of animal rescue groups as Hurricane Rita headed for Texas. Grass-roots animal welfare groups in Texas were hard at work, Paul Berry, Best Friends' hurricane relief director, said in a media release. ...

Saturday
--------
* Debate: Is the future of grizzly bears in danger?
No: Yellowstone grizzlies are a success story
  http://www.sltrib.com/opinion/ci_3059423
The federal government's proposal to take grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem off the Endangered Species Act's threatened species list represents a tremendous achievement. It also demonstrates America's enduring commitment to wildlife conservation. ...

* Yes: Bears aren't out of the woods yet
  http://www.sltrib.com/opinion/ci_3059454
Grizzlies and Yellowstone -- bears and geysers. People have been coming from around the world to see the national park's main attractions for decades.
Now, the Bush administration wants to remove the Yellowstone grizzlies from the list of species protected by the Endangered Species Act. I think delisting is premature, because we need more bears, more habitat and true habitat protection to do the job right. ...

### VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES ###

There are many opportunities any given week for volunteers to help with UARC's goals. Here's a few of things we need your help on:

  * Adopt a VSK Stand *

PETA has graciously given UARC thousands of Vegan Starter Kits and stands upon which to put them. We would like to place these stands across the valley and have them frequently refilled. Your responsiblities would include finding a highly trafficed place to put the stand, get permission from the owner of the building to place it, and refill the stand frequently.

To volunteer for any of these things, simply reply to this email. Thanks to Julie, Sean and David for volunteering!

### #########################################

That's it for this week.

Please consider becoming a member of UARC; with your membership card, you will get discounts to Coffee Under the Bridge, Sage's Cafe, Bangkok Thai, Bag Lady Boutique, Good Times Tattoo, and the Health Deli in St. George. To become a member, visit http://www.uarc.com/membership.html

Thanks!

Eric Waters
