It is sad that a family pet, a husky named Rowdy, was shot and killed by deputy sheriffs as the dog attacked a deer near Park City just a couple of weeks before Christmas.
  The dog's untimely death, however, was not the fault of the officers, who were simply performing one of their many duties: protecting wildlife. It was not Rowdy's fault. He was doing one of the things dogs do, when they are allowed to do it: stalking a winter-ravaged animal, intent on killing it. ...

* Cows shot; reward is offered for the culprit

A cattle rancher in Tooele County is offering a $3,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for shooting and killing seven cows.
  The dead cows, all pregnant at the time of the slaying, were discovered on Dec. 29 by a neighbor who was putting up a fence on adjacent property near Mile Marker 32 of State Road 36 north of Vernon. The neighbor noticed the cows lying down and walked over to check on them, according to Tooele County sheriff's Detective Ron Johnson. The cows appeared to be shot in the head and neck and were fanned out across the range about 200 yards from each other, he said. ...

* Spring bear hunt is back; board says risk to females low

Utah Wildlife Board members Thursday reinstated a controversial statewide spring bear hunt after a 14-year absence, saying females should not be overly affected, as once feared.

SPANISH FORK \u2014 Twenty-eight sheep were killed Friday when a freight train smacked into the rear-end of a semitrailer that was hauling the flock to a Utah Valley farm.
  Police say the driver of the truck was making a right turn from U.S. 6 onto 3450 East in Spanish Fork. He was cautiously watching the cars behind him because he had to make such a wide turn and did not look for a train. ...
