* Pop a pill, save a rhino
http://www.sltrib.com/opinion/ci_3869856
For years now, preservationists have been pleading and preaching in a failed attempt to get humans to stop slaughtering exotic and increasingly rare animals whose organs are believed to increase sexual potency. But it hasn't worked. Poachers risk bullets, handcuffs and steep fines for the profits from rhinoceros horns, tiger penises or the eggs of endangered sea turtles, all wrongly believed to enhance male sexual performance or desire.
It's time for a new approach. Let's turn people on to drugs. How do you say "Viagra" in Chinese? Would making Viagra, Levitra, Cialis or other pharmaceutical alternatives affordable around the world cause the demand for animal-based aphrodisiacs or sexual remedies to falter? ...

* Accused slayers of 13 deer charged with wildlife-law felonies
http://www.sltrib.com/utah/ci_3890842
Criminal charges have been filed against two Spanish Fork men accused of poaching 13 deer in Utah County. Cory Ray Brown, 25, and Kevin Jay Cloward, 24, were each charged Thursday in 4th District Court in Provo with one count of wanton destruction of wildlife, a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison, and one count of firing a gun from a vehicle or roadway, a class B misdemeanor. On April 10, 2005, conservation agents found 13 dead deer in Diamond Fork Canyon. Hunting groups offered a $4,500 reward, and the publicity led to the suspects, said Vic Layton, a conservation officer for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources.

* Can park, zoo bridge the gaps?
http://www.sltrib.com/utah/ci_3895369
Executives for Hogle Zoo and This Is The Place Heritage Park want to bridge their two worlds - literally.
But if politics and money are any measure, there is a long path to traverse before the outdoor parks, perched on Salt Lake City's east bench at the mouth of Emigration Canyon, can be connected. ...

* Cloned mules impress at professional race but come up short
http://www.sltrib.com/utah/ci_3900452
WINNEMUCCA, Nev. - Nature triumphed over nurture as two cloned mule brothers came up short in a professional race against traditionally bred runners.
Idaho Gem, the world's first equine clone, finished third while Idaho Star was seventh in an eight-way race Sunday at the 20th annual Winnemucca Mule Races, Show & Draft Horse Challenge. ...
