Tracy Aviary's prized bald eagle, which had been missing for two weeks, was found Monday morning ? 230 miles away in Ririe, Idaho.
"I'm surprised it got this far north. That's quite a hop and a skip," said Jim Porter, an animal control officer in Idaho Falls. "I would have assumed that it would have been found 10, 20, 30 miles from home. I didn't think it would come here because you've got to cross a mountain range." ...

Police recovered firearms and narcotics. ...

Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson wants to spend $4.7 million to spruce up Pioneer Park. City Councilwoman Nancy Saxton thinks she could do it with a couple of horses.
If Saxton's proposal comes to fruition, Pioneer Park could join the ranks of New York City's Central Park, Washington, D.C., and Canada ? it could be patrolled by horse-mounted police. ...

* Stacked deck: Wildlife amendment is legal, but misguided
http://www.sltrib.com/opinion/ci_3847140
The courts say it's legal, but that doesn't make it right.
In 1998, the Utah Legislature proposed and the voters passed Proposition 5, an amendment to the state's constitution. It says that initiatives placed on the ballot to affect hunting and fishing must be approved by two-thirds of the people voting. ...
* Zoos are not natural
http://www.sltrib.com/opinion/ci_3847135
I was sad when I read the article, "Escapee wolf turns Hogle into a zoo," and learned that Hogle Zoo supports live capture and cages beautiful animals.
Zoos can more accurately be described as "collections" of interesting "specimens" than actual havens or simulated habitats (real homes). Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to interfere with animals and keep them in captivity where they are bored, cramped, lonely, deprived of all control over their lives and far from their natural homes.
Animals belong in the wild, not in captivity. ...
