### VEGAN OUTREACH CHALLENGE GRANT ###

Update: $15 out of $100 has already been donated. Please donate today! Only two weeks left.

When UARC activists go leafletting, chances are good they'll be passing out Why Vegan? and Even If You Like Meat brochures, both created by Vegan Outreach. These invaluable pieces of literature have turned many people to a more compassionate lifestyle over the years. While UARC has been able to pay a bit of the costs of these brochures, Vegan Outreach relies upon donations to keep printing. It costs them 20 cents per brochure for printing, shipping and promotion.

In an effort to raise funds for this important organization, UARC will challenge all who read this email to donate today! If, by September 24th, at least $100 is donated to Vegan Outreach (with 'UARC Challenge Grant' mentioned in the comments of the donation), UARC will donate $100.

We're starting out small with $100, but if this goes well, we're excited to raise the stakes next time!

  http://www.sltrib.com/utah/ci_4293106
Henry, a Chihuahua puppy, survived being allegedly chased with a leaf blower and baked in an oven, but he lost a left eye and will always walk with a limp.
Animal-rights advocates were in court Tuesday to condemn 36-year-old Marc Christopher Vincent, of Murray, who is charged with two counts of animal cruelty for allegedly attacking the puppy earlier this year.
But advocates said the timing of the case could help their quest to increase the penalty for torturing animals. ...

ZCMI Center employees wielding nets chased down members of a bat colony that got into the mall's food court yesterday, reported the Deseret Morning News Wednesday.
A spokeswoman for Zion Securities Corp. said between six and 12 bats were in the center and food court, the paper reported.
The bats were Brazilian free-tailed bats, also known as Mexican free-tailed bats, native to Utah. Each year, the bats migrate to Baja, Mexico, for the winter. ...

LOGAN - The tight leash on Logan's canines was loosened Tuesday night when the City Council voted 4-1 to permit restrained dogs in public parks.
That's not to say the 350 acres of recreation area within the city's jurisdiction will go to the dogs. Upon the advice of a Logan City Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, canines will be invited to a limited number of the city's 20-plus parks - only where signs will be posted. ...

WASHINGTON - The House brushed aside objections from horse doctors and the White House and voted Thursday to outlaw slaughtering horses for people to eat.
Critics of the practice made an emotional appeal, showing photographs of horses with bloodied and lacerated faces, the result of being crammed into trailers destined for slaughterhouses. ...

* House OKs horse-slaughter ban

WASHINGTON - Horse slaughter will no longer be legal in the United States if a bill passed Thursday in the House also is approved by the Senate and the president.

SPOKANE, Wash. - It's 3 feet long, pinkish in color, smells like a lily and must be saved from extinction, conservationists said Thursday in asking the federal government to protect the Giant Palouse Earthworm under the Endangered Species Act.
Long thought extinct, the worm was rediscovered in the past year occupying tiny swatches of the heavily farmed Palouse region along the Washington-Idaho border. ...

GRACE, Idaho - An aging, out-of-service dam on the Bear River in southeastern Idaho is expected to be demolished by today, a move environmentalists say will improve the habitat for dwindling numbers of Bonneville cutthroat trout.
Pacificorp, the Utah-based utility that owns the 89-year-old Cove Dam near the town of Grace, says its destruction will also benefit utility customers. ...
